    Replace "Lenny" with "the Shadow King," and you've got a great video here. She's not exactly herself as seen by David's recollection...

    The thing I love about Syd's power is its uniqueness of mechanism. It activates as a mind swap, and deactivates as a body swap...and the distinction is kinda huge. I think it fits this show perfectly.

    This gave me a lot to think about, but i think you may have overlooked an important aspect. The Shadow King, i believe, represents childhood trauma. He affects David similarly to how trauma affects people. He causes intrusive thoughts, alters David’s memory, and much like trauma his presence is originally misdiagnosed as a mental illness. While David does have schizophrenia I don’t believe he starts showing symptoms of it until SK traps him in the box in his mind and he speaks to his “rational self” with the British accent. Also, I think its worth pointing out that the show’s creator Noah Hawley worked for the Legal Aid Society in New York City, dealing with cases involving child abuse and neglect.

      As the show progresses we find that much of what we've been told isn't _exactly_ the whole story. And David isn't as innocent nor as heroic as one might imagine. The theme becomes "are we able to rise above what our environment made us into? Or are we always going to be a certain way, no matter what? And if we have no say in the matter, what is it to be good or evil? And if there IS true evil, how can you fight it? Not with traditional means. I love this show.

    I think Westworld did a better job (I'm a little biased, since its my favorite movie) in portraying a "tamer" future. Nothing too extra, and people are not so extreme in their moral spectrum. In Altered Carbon, Takeshis sister is so obsessive about her brother she reaches levels of depravity, not even serial killers have. It just didn't make sense, almost all the bad characters in the movie were so bad and without any real motive it just felt irrational and forced. We just have to accept that they are super, mega, ultra bad and they are that way... because. Where as in Westworld, it made sense. They were rich, entitled and took everything they had for granted, they were overreaching in their indulgence, but not to an extent in which, they would not see logic and reason. Not only that, but they would feel regret after an event that was out of boundaries even for them and that does not involve slaughtering a persons entire family, just to "prove a point". Takeshis sister essentially slaughters Ortegas family while kidnapping her and then didn't understand why her brother wanted nothing to do with her and kept repeating "you're leaving me for her", as if she wasn't a murderous, sadistic and immoral person, letting people do insanely immoral acts even to children (which she should have understood is bad, considering her past). The movie was forced and full of plot holes, the science didn't add up and relied on just "it's alien tech, just humor us". Characters motives and actions essentially increased crime instead of decreasing it just because that's what the director wanted, regardless of whether or not it made sense. This got way too long, but It was a waste of time and I figured I'd share. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

    You guys imagine if there actually was something like heaven. The chip was something like a backup of the mind, the consciousness which was planet in the servers forever. But the actual mind and soul went to heaven after death. Meaning all these people that decided to manifest their consciousness in this virtual reality missed out on actual heaven. Something we couldn't even imagine while being alive, something not comparable to eternity but much greater. Crazy to think about.. I am not religious, but the thought is quite interesting

    Just wanted to reiterate how much I appreciate what you said at 9:28. "This moment is of an almost spiritual significance for Kelly." Also, your point that Kelly can finally make sense of "forever", which DIDN'T make sense to her when she was talking about her husband & daughter, is interesting. THANK YOU!

  • @DonnaBrooks
    @DonnaBrooks 4 года назад

    Wow, that was outstanding! So many people don't understand why Kelly made the decision she made, saying it wasn't earned or it didn't make sense after arguing so passionately about why she wasn't going to stay & the bond she had w/ Richard, or even that she was cheating on her husband (?!). I also felt that Yorkie being there to help her up, even after Kelly had slapped her, said some of the most hurtful things to her about only marrying her b/c she pitied her & that it was just a kindness to help her pass over *(see below), & then told her to go fuck herself, really impacted Kelly. As you pointed out, she was also reaching out to Yorkie again when just moments before she was pushing Yorkie away. *Really, Kelly? Because Greg & Yorkie had the marriage thing covered. You weren't needed. Then you showed up in a wedding dress w/ cans tied behind the vehicle AFTER Yorkie had already passed over! Deal with your anger at Richard & your guilt over considering moving on & knock it off with the "Come here! Go away!" cycle you keep putting yourself & Yorkie through! If you watch the whole ep, it's a series of cycles in which Kelly starts to feel something for Yorkie & moves toward her but then back peddles, but every time she comes back to Yorkie & she is more committed to her than before, leading up to that ultimate back peddle, followed by the crash, the 2 of them reaching toward each other, & then Kelly's ultimate decision! It made perfect sense for Kelly to stay with someone who has been so vulnerable and forgiving as Yorkie has been with her! Them reaching toward each other was the offering of forgiveness as you pointed out. BM just didn't want to resolve it onscreen b/c they wanted to save the big reveal for the ending; they had to give the impression that Kelly was leaving Yorkie & SJ for good this time. So THANK YOU for this wonderful video! I will share it on other channels where people are saying Kelly's choice didn't make sense. I guess people don't understand subtext & the visual medium of TV & still want to have exposition to understand a character. That's why many people expected Kelly to NOT stay after her passionate, heartbreaking outpouring of her pain & internal struggle & anger & loss of her husband & daughter. Maybe we are just losing our ability to understand others w/o words. Maybe our mirror neurons are being dulled by extensive text communication via the internet & cell phones, b/c I've noticed criticisms of characters in other movies where people just did not understand the subtext of scenes or relationships or a character's motivations. Subtlety doesn't seem to be understood. Everything needs to be in your face. It's like they need a character to verbally express their thoughts & feelings & reasons clearly b/c they can't extrapolate based on what they've already seen the character do.

    We are alienated indeed. We are defying ourselves as business men , bosses and who has high post then the other. And everyone treats others like shit. I mean those who are in high power. So take for example rich guy who is evil think highly of himself and he starts treating his men he pays like shit. Like they are nothing. Wtf. Even around people , people feel alienated. Because people are super not compatible with eachother. We have different interests and stuff and it will take a lot of time in order to find a perfect mach.
